OUR SUSTAINABLE FUTURE TOGETHER: FROM SDG LEARNING TO STUDENT ACTION
Our Sustainable Future Together is a flagship educational initiative of Westminster International University in Tashkent, developed in alignment with the mission of the UNESCO Chair on Knowledge Economy. Led by Dr. Komiljon Karimov, Rector of WIUT and Chair Holder of the UNESCO Chair, and Dr. Bakhrom Mirkasimov, Deputy Rector for Research and Innovation, the course creates a unique platform where sustainability, innovation, public policy, and student leadership come together.
Each year, the course welcomes 80+ students from different academic levels and disciplines, bringing together diverse perspectives, experiences, and ideas. Students are divided into small interdisciplinary groups of 5–6 members, encouraging collaboration across fields and helping participants learn how to work with people who think differently, study differently, and approach problems from different angles. This structure reflects the real world, where sustainable development requires cooperation between sectors, institutions, and communities.
Throughout the course, students explore the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals through expert-led sessions, discussions, and practical group projects. Rather than focusing only on theory, the course encourages participants to identify real challenges and develop workable, creative, and socially responsible solutions.
One of the key accomplishments of Our Sustainable Future Together is its ability to transform students from passive learners into active problem-solvers. By the end of the course, participants strengthen their critical thinking, teamwork, communication, and leadership skills while gaining a deeper understanding of how global goals can be connected to local realities. In this way, the course contributes to building a new generation of young leaders committed to sustainable, inclusive, and knowledge-based development.

Each year, the Our Sustainable Future Together course recognises the highest-performing student team whose final project demonstrates strong teamwork, creativity, practical thinking, and meaningful engagement with the Sustainable Development Goals. The winning teams represent the interdisciplinary spirit of the course, bringing together students from different academic programmes to design solutions for real-world challenges.
The 2024–2025 winning team developed its project around SDG 9: Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure, which focuses on building resilient infrastructure, promoting inclusive and sustainable industrialisation, and fostering innovation. This goal is especially important for developing knowledge-based economies, as it highlights the role of technology, research, entrepreneurship, and modern infrastructure in creating long-term economic and social progress.
