Academic and Financial Independence of Westminster International University in Tashkent (WIUT)

Westminster International University in Tashkent (WIUT) is the first international university in Uzbekistan. It was established in 2002, in conjunction of the "UMID" Presidential Foundation, the Ministry of Higher and Secondary Specialized Education of Uzbekistan, and the University of Westminster (London). WIUT`s mission is to provide International Standards of Education and Research Opportunities that contribute to the Intellectual, Social and Professional development of the Central Asian communities as well as Global Community.

WIUT students are taught by an academic team with significant international experience using a dynamic, student-centered teaching and learning philosophy. WIUT provides internationally recognized programs at undergraduate, postgraduate, and graduate levels. Undergraduate and postgraduate courses offered at WIUT are designed and validated in partnership with the University of Westminster (London), and are subject to the same quality assurance and control regulations as those taught in the UK. Classes are taught in English, with entry requirements and degree certificates meeting international standards. With a strong independent voice, WIUT established the Scientific Council in response to high demand in the labor market of Uzbekistan to researchers and higher education professionals with postgraduate degrees, specifically PhD and DSc. WIUT provides an opportunity for students to be introduced to the UK higher education culture, whilst the increasing number of international students at WIUT generates a global diversity within the classroom and teaching environment. Graduates from WIUT now play an important role in the development of Uzbek society and Central Asian communities as a whole.

WIUT has three Schools: (i) School of Business and Economics (SOBE); (ii) School of Law, Technology and Education (SOLTE), and (iii) The Graduate School (GS), offering doctoral programs. SOBE and SOLTE have (i) Management and Marketing; Economics; Finance; and (ii) Law; Computing; and Global Education academic departments. Courses at WIUT are designed and validated every five years, approved by Academic and Executive Committee Councils.

At the Government level, a Presidential Resolution “On additional measures to ensure the academic, organizational and managerial independence of state higher educational institutions” provides legislative basis for academic and financial independence for public universities in Uzbekistan. Since the foundation, WIUT has been public self-financed university.
