Iulduz Mamazhanova is a first year Economics with Finance course student from Kyrgyzstan.

When Iulduz chose Uzbekistan as her destination for studying, she was undertaking on much more than an academic adventure—it was a transformative journey. As she talks about her priorities to pursue her degree abroad, she highlights that she was looking for the British system of education. Therefore, WIUT was a silver lining for her, providing the UK degree in the heart of Central Asia. Another factor, influencing the choice of university was the country’s safety perception, ‘As a neighbouring country, I knew that Uzbekistan was quite safe, and people are quite similar, so I did not have any culture shock, moving to Uzbekistan brought sense of familiarity and comfort’. Having visited the country several times before, she knew the warmth of its people and the safety of its environment. Iulduz particularly highlights that after coming here she found out that not only Uzbek language, but also different other languages are quiet widely spoken, e.g. Karakalpak, Khorezm languages.

Her first proud moment came when she quickly learned to distinguish the many zeros in Uzbek banknotes—a skill that marked her initial step toward self-reliance. “It was overwhelming at first,” Iulduz recalls, “but every small challenge I overcame made me feel more capable. the challenges of adapting to a new academic culture, living independently, and the management of everyday tasks, such as tackling the local currency.”

Life at WIUT is nothing short of dynamic. As Iulduz describes it is a place where academic rigor and social vibrancy come together seamlessly. From intellectually stimulating lectures to the buzzing energy of student zones like ShB and the Blue Room, every corner of WIUT is designed to nurture growth.

“Every day, I meet new people and learn something new,” she shares. “The balance between studies and social life here is incredible. It’s a place where you grow, academically and personally.”

One of Iulduz’s most surprising discoveries was the linguistic diversity in Uzbekistan. “I thought only Uzbek was spoken here,” she says, “but I learned about Khorezm and Karakalpak languages, which was fascinating.” These cultural layers deepened her appreciation for the country and its people.

Events at WIUT, such as cultural gatherings where students share traditional dishes, have been a highlight in her journey. “Last year, we had a party where everyone brought food from their countries—it was amazing to see how food connects us all,” she recalls.

Thus, studying abroad became a lesson of independence and confidence for Iulduz. She is getting used to the lack of care from her parents, and in an academically demanding environment, she found new strengths in herself.

“Studying abroad isn’t just about academics,” she explains. “First of all, it teaches you endurance, it’s about becoming independent and gaining confidence. You realize you can handle challenges and succeed, which builds up your future.”

Later on, Iulduz’s dreaming of further education abroad, perhaps in a master’s program that aligns with her interests in economics. Her time at WIUT has not only prepared her academically but also given her a global perspective that will guide her journey forward.

What is it like at WIUT?

‘WIUT is a dynamic place to be at. It has both incredible, amazing social life, and distinguishing academic opportunities. I like how students balance their social life and their studies at the university. The campus itself is mobile and convenient. Classrooms are equipped with class of the art teaching equipment. And then we can go to student areas, such as LRC, student zone in in ShB, or Blue Room in the ATB, where there is always a harmonious buzz and heated discussions about the latest news, events, grades and of course lessons, creating the perfect atmosphere for both, learning and leisure. Moreover, there are lot of parties and events, that are organized by the SU or the University administration, different clubs.
Pursuing a degree away from my home, I find myself constantly learning new things. Especially, meeting new people really helps one to grow. It helps you to see the world differently. It significantly affects your mindset.’
