Past and Future of WIUT Chess Team

WIUT has long and rich history of chess. A series of chess events were held here, at WIUT, before our Team had even been formed. Yet, our history has started in April 2016, in so-called “Битва Корпораций” event. There, we were battling with various large companies of Uzbekistan, winning bronze medals at finish.

Further activities of our Team were associated with cooperating with Social Department and Sport Center to organize Dorm tournaments, internal chess competitions among students.

Our next crucial milestone was achieved, when we became absolute chess winners in the WIUT 15th anniversary cup, organized in the Blue Room of ATB building. Our competitors were strong, yet, without a doubt, we won the gold. Final standings: 1.WIUT, 2.University of INHA, 3.The Branch of Moscow State University in Tashkent. This moment we will never forget!

2017 was memorable for one particular event: simultaneous chess exhibition with world superstars: Nodirbek Abdusattorov and Vohid Shamsiddinov. Nodirbek is currently the second youngest grandmaster in the world history. The most interesting part of the event was the blindfold chess game between World and Asian Champion Javohir Sindarov and one of the students. Everyone was amazed by the memory and strategic thinking of the young champion. At the end of the event winners were awarded by the administration of the University.

Students and staff members had the opportunity to сompete with young chess players Begmuratov Humoyun and Yakubboev Nodirbek. For each session champions were given only 5 minutes while students had 15 minutes. Later on, World Champions Nodirbek Abdusattorov and Vohid Shamsiddinov gave a master-class for students. Students and staff members participated during this session.

2017 “Битва Корпораций” cup became a true challenge for our team. After a series of hard wars on the board, we finished with -1 from the bronze winning team; for the first time we were sad playing our lovely game. That day we will also never forget!

It is interesting to note that WIUT Staff members are good chess players. The absolute winner, Amirjonov Muhiddin, always shows amazing performance in all competitions and festivals.

During the summer holidays, our Team, in cooperation with the National Chess Federation, has organized historical match: Ex-World Champion Rustam Kasimdzhanov versus 20 Businessman in Ground Zero.

Rustam Kasimdzhanov has won 19.5 to 0.5. Successful entrepreneurs have made one draw. Good Job Rustam, we wish him good luck and looking forward at WIUT.

2018 has started confidently: “On 22nd of January Westminster International University in Tashkent organized a unique event: simultaneous chess play by Woman Grandmaster Tokhirjonova Gulrukhbegim, the strongest female chess player in Uzbekistan at the moment. The event is dedicated to the Day of Defenders of Motherland.

The champion was challenged by 20 students and staff members from our university at a simultaneous game. She is just 17, but already has obtained 3-5th places in the World Chess Championship(U20) among females in 2017, won Central Asian Cup and Asian Championship among females(U20) in 2015 and title of the best female Uzbek player 7 times from 2008 to 2016. The winner was awarded a special prize by the University.”(, 2018)

Woman Grandmaster Tokhirjonova Gulrukhbegim did not leave any chance for our students. Final result: 20-0. That moment, when losing to the beautiful lady in not a shame for chess player.

Recently, in February 2018, our team took part in “Универсиада” among foreign institutions in Uzbekistan. The rapid chess tournament was held at the branch of Plekhanov Russian University of Economics in Tashkent. The tournament was held in the framework of sport competitions between students.

Tournament was 5 round Swiss with the time control 15 minutes for each player and 7 teams competed with each other. These teams from Westminster International University in Tashkent, MDIS, Lomonosov Moscow State University, Tashkent Institute (branch) of PRUE, IUT, Turin Polytechnic University and Gubkin Russian State University of Oil and Gas (National Research University).

Among males, we won the bronze, among females, our diamond Nargiza won clear 5 out of 5 with gold. In total count, we won the 1st place.

We came from the first day to now with true enthusiasm and love to our game. However, without the support from the administration of our university that would not be possible. We would like to express our sincere gratitude to Nizom Kadirov, Alisher Xasanov, Alisher Sabirov and Bakhodir Keldiyarov for support and motivation.

Unfortunately, this year, most of us will graduate WIUT. However, we believe that Nargiza Foziljonova and her crew will continue the path we have started.

The WIUT Chess Team, 2018.
