What determines the demand for higher education in Uzbekistan?

Published in Research Seminars

Using Life in Transition Survey 2010 (LiTS II) household data by European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) and World Bank, I try to analyze what are the main “drivers” of getting higher education (HE) in Uzbekistan. The motivation for the current topic arises from increasing demand for HE in Uzbekistan. I resolve endogeneity problem by using consumption as a proxy for income. Probit estimates showed that family related factors, particularly household size and wealth of a household are the main drivers of the demand for HE. One’s age is also significantly associated with pursuing university degree. In line with previous research results, parental education also plays a significant role in children’s achieving HE.
