On 2nd May 2019, Westminster International University in Tashkent (WIUT) organized and hosted its first international conference on Applied Linguistics and Language Education. ICALLE2019 was a full day event, which was rich in presentations by local and international scholars who shared and exchanged their best teaching and research practices with the conference participants. The conference attracted over 160 scholars from various regions of Uzbekistan as well as other world regions, including Kazakhstan, Malaysia, Italy, Israel, China, the United Kingdom, and the United States of America. The conference program comprised over 40 presentations, which focused on the advancement of language education research and practice. Specifically, they addressed issues in the assessment of English language proficiency; national and schoolwide language policies; multilingualism; English for young learners; academic language; blended learning; inclusive education; teaching and learning of Central Asian languages to local and foreign students.
Professor Andrew Linn from the University of Westminster, London presented his keynote address on “English as opportunity and threat: Lessons from Scandinavia”, which ignited a hot debate among English language educators. Professor Ratnawati Mohd Asraf from International Islamic University, Malaysia shared her research and teaching practice entitled “Teaching English to students with learning disabilities in the inclusive, EFL classroom: where do we begin?”, an area that is still to be developed in many regions of the world. Professor Terry Lamb from the University of Westminster, London concluded the event with his plenary lecture on “Key shifts in the development of a pedagogy for autonomy in language education”.
