FOUR Reasons You May Want To Study This Course

Reason 1: The Course Is INTERNATIONAL.

It was originally designed in London and has been successfully delivered at University of Westminster (UK) for 15 years.  The programme of study reflects the main functional areas of international business.  It integrates theoretical knowledge with practical and enterprise skills in a global context, as international organisations constantly need employees who are able to understand and deal with the globalisation of business practice.

That’s why the course places great weight on the study of business and management in an international context.  All the core modules, and some of the electives, emphasise on the “internationality” of the subject matter.  As an example, business policy is studied in an international context in the core module “International Business Policy”.  The first two aims for this module, namely:

  • to develop the skills to analyse strategic problems and reach strategic decisions in an international context
  • to develop an understanding of the most important strategic issues confronting the international manager in the 21st century

These make it clear that the international dimension of the module is of paramount importance.  The same emphasis is reflected in the first stated learning outcome that,

  • on successfully completing this module, students will be able to “critically assess the forces that drive organisations to operate and to market internationally in the 21st century”.

Another example of a module studied in an international context is that of “Human Resource Strategies for the International Manager”. The module analyses societal cultures and considers their impact on, for example, motivation and reward structures in organisations.  Issues such as preparing employees to work overseas and the implications of working in multicultural teams are considered.

As a further example, economics is studied entirely in an international context and the core module “The International Economy” looks at key international issues such as trade, finance, foreign direct investment, and economic integration.

It is recognised that the industrial landscape is changing in the 21st century. The break up of large businesses –‘downsizing’, the changing role of women at work, the increased reliance on information technology, and the shift of the ideological centre of gravity towards economic liberalism have all conspired to challenge the traditional notions of work and lifetime employment.  The course team recognise these changes in both the teaching and assessment contained within the module syllabi.

Reason 2: The Course Is COMPREHENSIVE.

The programme reflects all the main functional areas of business – accounting, marketing, economics, information technology, human resources, and strategy. It is designed for those who want a broad grounding in all areas of management, typically for those who are at the early stage of their management careers, moving into line or lower level management in larger companies, or entrepreneurs or those running small firms whose start ups have matured to such a level that they require a broader base of knowledge to manage these functional areas. Right from the beginning, you will be assisted in thinking about how this course fits into your career goals and plans for the future. The University will seek to provide you with support as you look beyond the course to your next step.

Reason 3: The Course Is APPLIED.

It will enable you to integrate theoretical knowledge with practical application by helping them to reflect on the applicability of general theories to specific situations and evaluate the impact when applied to business cases. The course emphasises the development of practical management skills and you are assessed on assignments that reflect the type of analysis and decision-making managers have to take.  The project element of the course is an opportunity to study in depth a specific real life case study and come up with practical recommendations.

Reason 4: The Course Is FLEXIBLE.

Both in terms of your ability to specialise in various different areas of management and business and also in terms of the type of career paths you may take upon completion of the course.  The ability to choose the topic for the project, alongside a choice of elective modules in semester 2, allows you to focus on a particular area of interest.  Most important, the programme will enable you to start developing key competences we considered above.

A strong focus on upgrading skills is supported by personal development planning which allows you to track how your set of skills is being broadened on the course. You can also move into a variety of careers-while many will expect to pursue careers in large multinational companies either in Uzbekistan or outside of it, others will be able to apply the skills gained to entrepreunership, self employment and the management of small organizations as well as organisations in the public sector and non-profit sector in Uzbekistan and abroad.

As you can see, the programme is designed in a way to helping you discover how to start or advance your career, increase your success, expand your power to manage business and attract well-deserved partners. By learning and applying contemporary techniques and strategies you will have great chances of gaining financial independence and developing personally.

In addition, the programme is student centred rather than teacher led: students are expected to develop as independent researchers and critical thinkers, to prepare them for their careers and lifelong learning.

With these assets you will get higher advantage against your competitors who studied in similar areas.
