About University
Westminster International University in Tashkent (WIUT) was incorporated under Uzbek law by Decree 22 “About the Westminster International University in Tashkent” that approved by the Cabinet of Ministers of the Republic of Uzbekistan on 16 January 2002.
Westminster International University in Tashkent (WIUT) was established in collaboration with the University of Westminster (UK) and “UMID” Foundation of the President of the Republic of Uzbekistan, a Foundation established by the Edict of the President of the Republic of Uzbekistan dated 7 January 1997 to support the study abroad of talented youth of Uzbekistan.
The objective of establishing WIUT was to provide an international standard of Higher Education in Uzbekistan to enable citizens of Uzbekistan and other countries to obtain an internationally recognised Bachelor education in Business, Business Computing, Economics and Law and Master education in International Business and Management all validated by the University of Westminster. The courses are developed in phases.
In the first phase WIUT delivers a Certificate in Foundation Studies Course, an entry-level qualification for a Bachelors degree, and a Certificate of Higher Education, which is the first year of a Bachelor of Arts in Business, was validated on September 2002.
The second phase is continued with the Foundation Studies course and then developed and validated the second year of the BA (Hons) Business (Diploma in Business) and the first year of the Degree courses in Business Computing, Economics and Law (all as a Certificate in Higher Education), was validated on August 2003.
The final phase was validated of the full degree programmers in Business, Business Computing, Economics, and Law, on May 2004.
The carefully planned development of the University is an essential part of the strategy to build a University that delivers and maintains an international quality of Higher Education. The University of Westminster is the validating institution and graduates will receive their awards from the University of Westminster. This ensures that the award certificate and transcript of results held by successful students will be internationally recognized for employment and for admission to a relevant course of further study.
The University of Westminster validates the awards of WIUT and also provides support for the development of staff, systems and management of the University. There are also three University of Westminster staff employed to help manage WIUT as well as international teachers employed by the University of Westminster, from the UK, other European countries, the USA and some Asian countries. The majority of academic staff are from Uzbekistan but they have been educated in the UK, USA or Europe, with either a Bachelor and/or a Masters degree from one of these countries. In addition many of the administrative staff have been educated in the UK, mainland Europe or the USA.
The strategy of the University is to develop and maintain a world class quality of Higher Education, in partnership with other international institutions. Its main partner is the University of Westminster, a leading modern University of 23,000 students, whose origins date from 1838. The University of Westminster is based in the centre of London and has a strong international reputation for delivering quality education around the world. It is the main validating university, and it has the power, like all UK universities, to award its own degrees and can validate courses in other universities. The validated courses are subject to the same quality assurance and control requirements as courses delivered in the UK. The University of Westminster, like all UK universities, is also subject to review by the Quality Assurance Agency, a public agency responsible for reviewing the management of academic quality and standards of universities in the UK.
