Living in Tashkent

Tashkent, the capital of Uzbekistan, is a city of over 2 million people, one of the largest cities in the former USSR and the largest in Central Asia.  It has an International Airport with connections to Europe, USA, Asia and the former USSR countries and an extensive and impressive metro system that serves the city.  It is a pleasant city with tree lined avenues, restaurants, 5 five star hotels and numerous bars.   There are supermarkets as well as the traditional bazaar where most foodstuffs and household goods can be bought.  It has the charm of a Central Asian city, with the facilities of a modern city.  The university is situated in the centre of Tashkent, in one of the city’s oldest buildings.

Tashkent is a city of young people and has the usual facilities for an active social life.  There are nightclubs, bowling alleys, cinemas and cultural activities.  The students have social activities and opportunities to play sport.  Tashkent is a busy metropolitan city, and although very different to London it offers a safe and pleasant environment in which to live.

The weather is mild in winter and hot in summer, with excellent spring and autumn seasons.  Tashkent is within easy access of beautiful countryside; within an hour you can be in the Charva k Mountains, where snow stays on until early spring.  Tashkent has good connections to the ancient Silk Road cities of Samarkand and Bukhara, famous for their history and architecture.

Tashkent has a lot to offer.  Make the most of it!
