More information about the course
Observation and Supervision of Teaching
The observation of four of your sessions will allow you to be given feedback and will help you reflect. The role of observer you are asked to take both during your observation of an experienced colleague as well as the peer-evaluation you will engage in during the micro-teaching session, will aid you in becoming more aware of the range of possibilities for facilitating student learning.
You will be required to undertake the observation of an experienced colleague’s teaching with a specific research question, which you will use to research a specific focus of classroom activity. Your reflection on this observation and the implications for your own teaching will be included as part of your coursework assignment. You must place your reflections within the context of the literature.
Employment and Further Study Opportunities
Participants who earn credits from this course and who progress to a further course of study in education may be able to claim credit for this prior learning, at the discretion of the admitting institution.
Taking the course will help participants to fulfill their role in supporting the learning of students more efficiently and effectively.
For participants who might want to enhance their career in education, the Certificate of Special Study in Teaching and Learning will demonstrate serious pedagogic intent, and also assures any future employers that you have achieved a qualification with external validity, and a verified standard.
The award of the Certificate will verify that you have met a defined set of module outcomes and that you are developing as an effective teacher. This will provide evidence for your students and your current or any prospective employer of your capability in teaching and supporting learning.
Support for Students
The first session will introduce students to the staff responsible for the course, the campus on which they will be studying, the Library and IT facilities. Students will be provided with the Course Handbook, which provides detailed information about the course. Participants from WIUT’s academic staff will also have the support of their subject area/course leaders. Course participants from partner institutions will receive support from designated experienced members of their own staff. These will be chosen according to teaching and counselling experience.
Learning support includes the WIUT Library which holds a special Teaching and Learning collection including the key course texts, and numerous electronic resources including databases, e-journals, CD-ROMs and internet links. The University also has many computers available for students use and an intranet where students can access course materials and communicate with staff and one another via message boards.
