About the Programme

Westminster International University in Tashkent announces a call for applications for the mobility of under- and postgraduate students, PhD students, postdoctoral research and teaching staff. The all mobility will be funded by the Erasmus Mundus External Cooperation Window (Lot9) (EMECW) programme which is initiated and supported by the EuropeAid Cooperation Office of the European Commission (http://ec.europa.eu/europeaid) and managed by the Education, Audiovisual and Cultural Executive Agency (EACEA) (http://eacea.ec.europa.eu/).

EMECW aims to promote the partnership activities for the organisation of mobility and the transfer of know-how and best practices and implementation of individual mobility for students and academic staff.

The programmes Lot 9 involves 27 EU Members States of the European Union, Candidate Countries (Croatia and Turkey), EEA countries (Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway) and Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan.

EMECW Lot 9 funding for 2007-2008 was granted to the Consortium including WIUT. Within this funding period 3 undergraduate, 2 postgraduate students, 1 PhD and 4 teaching staff of WIUT were provided with mobility grants for the exchange study/teaching visits to EU partner universities. In addition to this, 4 EU undergraduate and 1 PhD students from EU partner universities are currently studying at WIUT.

Types of individual mobility flows

EMECE Lot 9 may offer the following five types of individual mobility flows for WIUT students and academic staff to EU partner universities:

  • undergraduate – 3 students with duration of 6-10 months;
  • master – 2 students with duration of max 6-10 months;
  • doctorate – 1 or 2 with duration of max 20-22 months;
  • post-doctorate – 1or 2 with duration of 6-10 months;
  • academic staff – 3 with duration of one month.

Who can apply

EMECW Lot 9 mobility grants can be offered to citizens of the partner countries who might represent one of the following three target groups:

  • TARGET GROUP 1: Students and academic staff registered in a HEI member of the applicant partnership (in particular WIUT students and academic staff);
  • TARGET GROUP 2: Nationals of an eligible Central Asian country, enrolled in (or having obtained a university degree from) a HEI of these countries non-member of the applicant partnership;
  • TARGET GROUP 3: Nationals of an eligible Central Asian country in a particularly vulnerable situation (refugees, asylum seekers, unjustified expulsion/discrimination, indigenous populations ).

For EU students applying to exchange studies/research at WIUT

All these courses award the University of Westminster (UK) credits upon successful completion of studies.

Selection criteria

The Consortium members will apply the following selection criteria:

  • Language Skills (depending on receiving university);
  • Academic performance;
  • Research proposal (for PhD and postdoctoral applicants only);
  • Proposal on academic activities during the mobility (for teaching mobility applicants only)
  • Motivation;
  • Recommendations;
  • Equal opportunities;
  • Gender balance.

How to apply

Applicants should submit a hard copy and email scanned versions of the following documents:

  • a clearly readable signed application form with one recent passport photograph attached,
  • a copy of the original academic degree (for MA, PhD and Post PhD application) or a copy of the academic records (for BA application),
  • a certified translation in English of degree or transcript of academic records,
  • TOEFL, IELTS certificate or attestation of language course in Spanish, Polish, French, Czech, Lithuanian, Dutch, Finnish or Turkish depending on the language of instruction offered in the receiving university;
  • a letter of recommendation in English delivered by the academic personal tutor / course leader,
  • a personal statement in English describing the applicant’s aspirations, interests, experience, talents, professional-academic – personal motivation, the reason for participating in the programme, the choice of the host university, the reasons why the applicant thinks his/her competences and abilities make him/her think he/she is a good candidate,
  • a certified copy of birth certificate,
  • a statement of civil status,
  • a copy of passport pages with name, date, place and expiry date.

In addition master students, PhD students and post doc applicants will describe their research topic, methodology, feasibility and expected outcomes in a separate document. They will also justify the added value of the research/studies for the project’s objectives.

Academic staff should submit also a written proposal on academic activities (indicative content of teaching and research or other academic activities) which will be carried out during the mobility.

How to submit applications

Hard copy of applications must be submitted to the Dean’s Office.

Scanned copies of applications must be emailed to EMECW_9@wiut.uz

Applicants applying to undergraduate mobility grants should note the following:

  • In WIUT case, only the current level 4 students, i.e. students to be fully progressed to level 5 in the academic year 2008-2009, are recommended to apply and grant-receiving students MUST get permission of the University administration for the mobility in due process before applying;
  • In case of other Uzbekistan HEI students as Target Group II applicants, only the current 2-3 year students (progressing to 2-4 years of study in the academic 2008-2009) are recommended to apply.

The deadline of applications

All applications (computer files and hard copies) MUST be submitted by 13.00 of Saturday, 31 May 2008.

WIUT English Test for Central Asian Applicants

EMECW applicants must prove their English knowledge competence with any certified English test certificate like IELTS or TOEFL. Applicants who do not have a valid English certificate can take WIUT English test to prove their English language competences.

Note that only selected and reserve applicants will be offered to take the WIUT English test.

WIUT English tests will be organized in each partner country for the convenience of EMECW applicants and are scheduled in the following way:

  1. For KYRGYZSTAN Applicants - Tests will be given to all Kyrgyzstan applicants in Bishkek on 10 JUNE 2008 starting at 09:00 a.m. in two shifts in the premises of the Bishkek State University of Economics and Business. For details contact Alymbekov.bsiec@rambler.ru or keukg@rambler.ru
  2. For TAJIKISTAN Applicants - Tests for Khujand applicants will be given on 07 June 2008 starting at 09:00 a.m. in a single shift in the building of Khujand Branch of Technology University of Tajikistan.   3. For UZBEKISTAN Applicants - Tests for Uzbekistan applicants who live closer to Tashkent will be given on 10 June 2008 at 14:00 in a single shift in the building of Westminster International University in Tashkent. For details contact: EMECW_9@wiut.uz
  4. Tests for Uzbekistan applicants who live in the south and north-west of the country may take the English test in Bukhara on 11 June 2008 at 11:00 a.m. in the building of Bukhara State University. For details contact: ajuraev@mail.ru

CA applicants may take WIUT English test in any of the above venues but with a prior registration to the test at least two days before the test date sending their request to emecw_9@wiut.uz

Please note:

- Target Group 1 applicants MUST get pre-selection in their home institutions;

- Target Group 2 applicants should get pre-selection from the relevant National Coordinator. The National Coordinator for Uzbekistan is Westminster International University in Tashkent (contact email: emecw_9@wiut.uz).
