12th May 2006
Tashkent, Uzbekistan

Westminster International University in Tashkent invited interested practitioners and scholars to participate in a day conference on the issues of governance and reform in higher education. Although there is a broad consensus on the need for countries of the former Soviet Union and Eastern Europe to move towards the adoption of international standards and systems in higher education there is an ongoing debate about the nature and pace of such reform and what needs to be done to develop the capacity to cope with change and to ensure sustainability. The goal of the Conference, which was supported by the Ministry of Higher and Secondary Special Education, was to provide a forum for the discussion of key issues relating to the reform of governance, management and delivery of higher education in this region the countries of which are at different stages of political, social and economic transition and nation building.
